Anthony Smith

Anthony started his career at ICI as an Apprentice Electrician before joining Cleveland County Council as a Lighting Technician, working at a number of local authorities including York and Durham where he progressed to the role of Street Lighting Engineer.
In 2005 Anthony became Director of Stainton Lighting Design Services where he has focused on all aspects of exterior lighting design.
Acting as Design Principal he oversees the day to day running of this award winning lighting design practice and has taken a design lead in numerous lighting projects ranging from major highway lighting schemes to award winning prestigious architectural lighting projects, including acting as Design Lead on the refurbishment of Durham Castle and Cathedral. He has also provided technical advice to local authorities and highway agency clients with regard to a number of lighting, asset management and planning issues.
He is active with the ILP (Institution of Lighting Professionals) nationally and regionally, being past Regional Chairman of the ILE (Institution of Lighting Engineers) and then the ILP, he spent 6 years on National Council and M+E committee before being involved in the transition from ILE to ILP as Vice President Education. Anthony was also a member of Mesopic Lighting Panel and sits on the ILP diploma marking panel. His active involvement in the Institution has been recognised with Anthony becoming a Fellow of the ILP in 2014 and In June 2019 Anthony had the honour to take up the Presidency of the ILP.
Anthony was a member of the steering group responsible for the 3rd Edition ILP Technical report TR22 Managing Vital Asset and as a PTLLS accredited trainer delivers seminars for the Institute of Lighting Professionals on the implementation of the guidance given in the document.
In 2013 Anthony became a lecturer on the ILP diploma developing a wide range of lighting topics and also becoming Lead Lecturer on Module A and delivering significant content on Module B.

Mike Curtis

Director
Mike is currently a Director of Stainton Lighting Design Services binging to the company a wealth of knowledge and expertise in lighting and electrical engineering.
Mike started his career with an Electrical Apprenticeship at ICI Wilton before progressing in an electrical engineering role for both the private and public sectors which included working overseas in mainland Europe and Gibraltar.
On his return to the UK Mike was employed by Cleveland County Council and following Local Government reorganisation took on the role of Highway Lighting Engineer within the reformed Middlesbrough Council Unitary Authority.
In 2006 Mike took on the challenge of joining Anthony Smith as a Director of Stainton Lighting Design Services.
Within the SLDS role Mike predominantly works within the A19 DBFO Highways England Contract providing electrical support services and project management and of late involvement with other Highways England Asset Delivery Contracts.
Mike is an associate member of the Institution of Lighting Professionals and has previously been a committee member of the North East Region.

Steve Edwards

Steve Edwards joined the team at Stainton Lighting Design Services in 2010 as a Lighting Consultant and has since progressed through the company to Design Manager for the Specialist/Architectural division of the company.
Previously Steve worked for Urbis Schreder, initially as an Applications Engineer in 1999 and progressed through the ranks to Regional Support Manager overseeing all lighting designs undertaken in the Northern region.
During his time at Stainton Lighting he has worked numerous major projects including Toffee Factory, Durham Cathedral/Castle, and Stockton High Street which features a state of the art 35 DMX universe lighting system. Recently Steve has designed the final phase for a dynamic lighting installation on Tees Newport Bridge.
He has been an affiliate of the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP) since 1999 and is currently working towards full membership. Steve is a previous chairman for the North East region and is working towards IEng status with the Engineering Council via the ILP.
He has also delivered numerous technical papers on subjects such as advances in LED technology and design of lighting installations. Currently he is lecturing for the Institute of Lighting Professionals on the Lighting Diploma Module C and delivers an Electric Know-How course to architectural lighting designers for the ILP too.

Lindsey Cockerill

Lindsey joined Stainton Lighting Design Services (SLDS) in November 2011 following redundancy from Cleveland Police.
She is a highly conscientious and professional Office Manager, with extensive knowledge in PA, secretarial and administration roles.
Lindsey’s current role involves managing the daily operations of a demanding engineering design office, including directing office support activities. Other responsibilities include staff training and supervision, activity and task scheduling, obtaining and allocation of resources, management and improvement of internal processes, the implementation of procedures and policies, general administration duties and office accounting, HR, salary and pension functions, recruitment and the organisation of events.

Mandy Petitt

Mandy joined the team at Stainton Lighting Design Services in 2012 as a Lighting Consultant, and brings experience from various aspects of lighting design, including architectural floodlighting, sports lighting and highway lighting.
Previous to this, Mandy started out in the lighting industry as an applications engineer at Urbis Lighting providing lighting design for all types of urban environment as well as the provision of architectural lighting of structures. She progressed to Senior Regional Engineer, overseeing all lighting designs and customer orders for the Northern region and providing support to the regional sales team.
Following on from this she moved on to work at Atkins Ltd as Lighting Engineer undertaking various major lighting projects including sections of the M25 and the M56 producing full lighting design, specification and electrical design. While at Atkins Ltd, Mandy was seconded to Gateshead Council to help manage their Invest to Save project, involving the replacement of all lantern units across the borough.
In her current role, Mandy is managing the next phase of the Gateshead Invest to Save project which involves the replacement of approximately 10,000 lanterns from a conventional lantern to an LED lantern. This involves the breakdown of the various areas of the borough to carry out lighting design and assisting with lantern orders and installation sheets.
Mandy also assists with lighting design for Section38 and Section278, major highway projects, and lighting checks for local and international projects.

Andrew Wells

Andrew commenced his career as an Electrical Apprentice at ICI Wilton in 1987. After leaving ICI he worked as a JIB Installation Electrician for various companies including James Scotts, Redpath Engineering Services, Lorne Stewart, Dimewest (working for Northumbrian Water) and BKE.
He worked as an electrician for David Webster a street lighting contractor working mostly on the Stockton and Middlesbrough Council contracts. Carrying out maintenance, electrical testing/fault finding and installation work. He had various roles at David Webster including Civils Supervisor, Contracts Supervisor and Contracts Manager. It was in his time at David Webster that he gained his HNC in Electrical Engineering.
He had the role of Lighting Engineer at Hambleton District Council from 2006 – 2007
Andrew joined the team at Stainton Lighting Design Services (SLDS) in 2007, specialising in highway lighting and signing.
In this time at SLDS, Andrew has carried out lighting and electrical design work for Sunderland PFI (Aurora), A19 DFBO and Stockton Borough Council. He has worked alongside Mike Curtis on the A19 Joint Venture Agency contract, Dishforth to Tyne Tunnel Electrical Support Service Management for lighting and signing maintenance.
Andrew is an Associate Member of the Institution of Lighting Professionals (AMILP) and Engineering Technician with the Engineering Council (Eng Tech).
Andrew is currently pursuing becoming a Member of the Institution of Lighting Professionals.

Dave Hall

Dave joined Stainton Lighting Design Services (SLDS) in January 2012 and has become an important member of the team. His role includes designing exterior lighting systems for roadways and feature lighting projects.
He commenced his career with the North East Electricity Board in 1981 undertaking an electrical craft apprenticeship and developed his career through different roles within the industry.
Dave has built up his road lighting experience commencing in the industry as an electrician in 1986, working nationwide as a contractor on motorways and major trunk roads, carrying out maintenance work for local authorities and installation work for civil engineering companies.
Throughout his career he has progressed through the ranks of Supervisor and Contracts Manager prior to becoming a Designer.
With SLDS Dave has been successful in achieving NEBOSH National General Certification and National Certification in Construction Health and Safety. He has also gained his Exterior Lighting Diploma and has recently become a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Dave is currently working towards becoming an Incorporated Engineer through the Institution of Lighting Professionals.
Dave’s work includes carrying out highway surveys for Highways England (HE) primarily to identify and scope works prior to development of schemes through HE’s Value Management process and on to full design preparing construction drawings, Bills of Quantities and detailed specification documents to the current HE standards. He has also recently been a valuable member of the team contributing to the design process for recent architectural lighting projects.
Within the company Dave is a significant team member for electrical design and wiring regulations for projects in the UK and abroad.

Don Anderson

Don started his career at Rolls Royce Parsons as an Apprentice Electrician then went into Electrical Contacting before starting in street lighting in 1985 with JW Street Lighting in the North-West region.
He has spent over 30 years in street lighting starting as a Highway Electrician dealing with all aspects of installation and maintenance on all classifications of roads. He quickly became a foreman then went on to Contracts Manager
He was involved in the formation of AOne when Colas and Halcrow amalgamated for the HA area 20 contract and headed up the street lighting department. While the transformation was underway to the new contract Don headed up both area’s 18 and 20.
Don has spent 6 years in local authority with Carlisle City Council managing the street lighting department, Signs shop, festive lighting, the cities estates depot and the electrical department with a team of P.A.T testers
He went on to manage a range of TMC and PFI contracts such the Newcastle & North Tyneside / Leeds / Wakefield and Manchester Street Lighting PFI Contract as a Project Manager. The asset base for these contracts ranged from 33,000 to 110,00
Throughout Don’s career he has been heavily involved in pricing contracts assisting the companies estimating department and has spent 2yrs as bid manager with Amey. He has also been selected to sit on many select panels for company policy, Health and safety and procurement procedures and compliance.
He is currently working on the Highways England Area 7 contract assisting the Street Lighting Asset Delivery Manager.
Don is an Associate member of the Institution of Lighting Professionals and has in the past been a regional committee member for many years.

Neil Jackson

Neil joined Stainton Lighting Design Services in 2015 and brings with him experience from almost 20 years within the lighting industry with varying engineering and managerial roles.
Neil started his electrical career in heavy industry and was involved with the installation, maintenance and upgrade of large industrial machinery such as vertical and horizontal borers, tunnelling equipment and CNC turners for use in the aeronautical and mining industry.
Neil then moved into street lighting as a maintenance engineer with David Webster Limited and was soon promoted to the position of Supervisor before moving on to the role of Contracts Manager for the Middlesbrough and Stockton Council street lighting term maintenance contracts, a position he held for 4 years.
Progression to the Operational Manager role for the North East followed after the acquisition of David Webster BY the large French Engineering company Bouygues Construction.
Neil was responsible for the overall management of the branch and its term maintenance contracts, all civils works and management of external contracts within various sectors across residential, commercial and MOD contracts, as well as successfully integrating the Redcar and Cleveland 25 year street lighting PFI contract to fit in with the North East branch operations.
When Stockton Council decided to bring their street lighting service in house to deliver a large scale invest to save programme of 28000 LED replacement luminaires and 8500 column replacements, Neil moved to the local authority and set up the new depot and operations after 20 years of the service being with an external contractor
In his current role Neil has joined Stainton as a Lighting Engineer and is currently involved in lighting and electrical designs for Highways England, as well as carrying out value management reports, and technical surveys. Neil is also involved in the lighting design for Section 278 developments.
Neil is an Affiliate member of the ILP and is currently working towards membership level and has completed Levels 1 to 3 of the ILP lighting Diploma. Whilst with SLDS Neil passed all elements of the NEBOSH National Certificate In Construction and Health,and has recently completed his 18th Edition Wiring Regulations course.

Lee joined Stainton Lighting Design Services as a Lighting Technician in December 2013 from North Yorkshire County Council Road Lighting Team where he had successfully completed a 6 year apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering. During his apprenticeship he gained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering whilst also gaining a variety of experience from the different aspects that local government road lighting had to offer.
Within his role at Stainton Lighting Design Services Lee currently looks after the maintenance and new works contract at Hambleton and Richmond District Council with his remaining time looking at section 38/278’s for new and regular development clients.
In both roles at North Yorkshire County Council and Stainton Lighting Design Services Lee has undertaken site experience and surveys in order to populate inventory information and information required prior to design.
Since joining SLDS Lee has completed his lighting Diploma and gained valuable experience of lighting design, good practice and solutions. He is working towards his IEng.
Most recently Lee has completed the IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition.
Lee is currently an affiliate member of the Institute of Lighting Professionals (ILP).

Elizabeth Harrison joined the Stainton Lighting Design Services Team in July 2012 firstly as Admin Assistant progressing to Technical Assistant in September 2013. From here, on completion of her ILP Lighting Diploma resulting in an achievement of a Distinction, Elizabeth advanced further to Lighting Designer in September 2016.
In her current role, Elizabeth has been heavily involved with Stockton Borough Council’s Lighting Replacement Project as well as currently working on Gateshead Council’s Invest to Save scheme. Both involve undertaking Lighting Design, Site Surveys and correspondence with both the client and local residents. This has allowed Elizabeth to gain valuable experience in these fields alongside general good practice.
Elizabeth has progressed her professional development by obtaining further qualifications such as ILP Exterior Lighting Diploma Module 4, Work in vicinity of Electricity Company equipment -G39 and 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
In November 2015 Elizabeth joined the Young Lighting Professionals (YLP) as, at the time North East representative. At present the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP) is adapting from ‘Regions’ to ‘Lighting Delivery Centres’ (LDC). Linking with this, Elizabeth is due to take up the position of Durham LDC chair for the year 2019-2020 as well as keeping her role as Durham LDC representative.
Elizabeth is an Affiliate member of the Institution of Lighting Professionals and is currently working towards furthering her membership to EngTECH, to be achieved by Summer 2019.

Liam Joined Stainton Lighting Design Services in September 2011 as an Apprentice from Hartlepool College of Further Education. During his time as an Apprentice Liam completed his HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering as well as gaining valuable work experience in street lighting.
Liam has progressed his professional development by obtaining numerous qualifications such as ILP Exterior Lighting Diploma Module 4, ILP TR22 Managing a Vital Asset, Work in vicinity of Electricity Company equipment -G39, 18th Edition Wiring Regulations and Engineering Council Eng-Tech.
Liam’s current role mostly incorporates Highways England projects, Local Authority and S38/278 development schemes. Liam has also undertaken a lead role on Northumberland County Council Lighting Replacement Programme of Works.
Liam is an associate member of the Institute of Lighting Professionals (AMILP) and Engineering Technician with the Engineering Council (Eng Tech) and is looking to progress his career and Achieve IEng status in the near future.

Andrew Parkinson

Andy joined Stainton Lighting Design Services in September 2018 from A K Lighting and Signs bringing over 25 years’ experience in traffic sign and street lighting installation.
During his time at Ak Lighting and Signs Andy worked his way up from sign erector to supervisor level working on both the Leeds then Barnet and Enfield pfi’s looking after the installation of street lighting / signs and bollards with all associated civils, after the successful completion of these projects Andy was promoted into management.
Working as a depot Manager on 4 major street lighting pfi contracts Andy was responsible for the day to day running of the depot, working closely with the client to ensure all works were planned and completed on time and to budget with the least disruption to the public. After completion of these projects Andy was promoted to contracts manager for the north also taking over the roll of company health and safety champion.
Andy’s primary role at SLDS is as Site Engineer undertaking lighting, electrical and civil inspections on both major works and S38 S278 prior to handback/adoption. Additionally, Andy provides a site RE role on contracts where a closer link between design and installation is desirable.

Louise comes from a predominantly Local Authority background, working in a financial setting for many years.
Joining Stainton Lighting Design Services to carry out internal quality audits, Louise’s role has expanded to incorporate the duties of Finance Officer with responsibility for the production of, and chasing up of, invoices as well as the production of financial reports and project audits.

Abi Robinson joined Stainton Lighting Design Services in July 2016. Working directly for the Office Manager, Abi’s main duties as Administrative Assistant are in the delivery of works as directed by technical staff.
This work ranges from assistance with basic Acad, outline documents, data entry and any other general assistance.
Additionally, Abi also provides general administrative duties as directed by the Office Manager.

Brian started his career at British Shipbuilders as an Apprentice Electrician before joining Newcastle City Council working as Energy Conservation Technician and subsequently moved in to Street Lighting initially employed as an Estimator Surveyor and then progressing to become a Street Lighting Engineer.
He spent over 25 years in street lighting dealing with all aspects of exterior lighting in Newcastle including various architectural lighting schemes such as the Tyne Bridge, Chinese Arch, the Sir Bobby Robson Memorial Garden and the Lighting of the Olympic Rings which were mounted on to the side of the Tyne Bridge as part of London 2012 Summer Olympics.
He was involved in the procurement of the Newcastle & North Tyneside Street Lighting PFI Contract as a Technical Adviser for the two authorities.
At the initialisation of the PFI Contract in 2004 he was responsible as the Contract Monitoring Manager to oversee the delivery of the contract by the service provider including the 5 year asset replacement programme (52,000 columns) and the ongoing maintenance of all street lighting assets.
For the last 5 years Brian has worked as a Consultant Engineer within Stainton Lighting Design Services delivering a range of exterior lighting services to a number of clients from both local government and the private sector.
Brian is an Associate member of the Institution of Lighting Professionals and regularly attends the regional meetings.

Ian Dawson

Ian commenced his career as an Electrical Apprentice at Jackson & Rich Electrical Contractors Rochdale in 1978. After qualifying as an Electrician he worked for two other Electrical Contractors in the North West, gaining the grade of JIB Approved Electrician in 1985.
Ian then moved in to Street Lighting for the first time as an Approved Electrician with Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council in August 1985 and gained promotion to Electrical Technician in 1988. He has since worked at Bury Metropolitan Borough Council, Hambleton District Council and Durham County Council in various Lighting Roles with more than 20 years experience in the Street Lighting industry.
Ian first joined Stainton Lighting Design Services (SLDS) in 2011 working for 3 years as a Consultant Lighting Engineer for both Hambleton and Richmondshire District Council as well as undertaking Designs for other Authorities in the North East including Stockton, Redcar, Darlington, Durham and others.
Ian then worked as a Facilities Officer at Hambleton District Council for 3 years before returning to SLDS as Lighting Engineer in June 2017.
Ian is a Member of the Institution of Lighting Professionals (MILP) and Incorporated Engineer with the Engineering Council (I.Eng). He has held the position of treasurer for the North-East Region of the ILP on two occasions, the first for 11 years between 2005 and 2016 and secondly from April 2018 until June 2019. Ian remains on the Durham LDC Committee.

Dave spent six years undertaking general electrical installation and design work within British Steel before becoming an Electrical Draughtsman.
He then spent the next 30 years in local government, specialising in all aspects of exterior lighting and associated electrical design work he reached the level of Senior Lighting Engineer within Cleveland County Council with responsibility for a wide range of work such as the delivery of capital work programmes, writing of contract documentation, floodlighting schemes and lighting management, before its abolition as part of local government reorganisation.
For the last 10 years Dave has worked as a Consultant Engineer and Partner within Stainton Lighting Design Services delivering a wide range of specialist exterior lighting and electrical design services to a number of clients from both local government and the private sector.
Dave is a member of the Institution of Lighting Professionals (MILP) and also the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IEng) (MIET).
